Piano Practice Log Book
Told Instructions Don't Get Through, So We Retreated
Our beginner piano player is a second-grader. At the first piano class we went to after moving to Kofu, it felt like... they don't accept non-standard students. The teacher said "instructions don't get through" and I thought this is no good, we shouldn't stay here, so we withdrew from that piano class.
Music is Fun
The new piano class teacher's guidance has many approaches and seems strong with non-standard students too, which feels good. And they use polite language even with children. Their passion for "let's enjoy music!" comes through strongly.
Making a Log Book
This is serious. I felt I needed to make something to support practice at home, and so a log book was created to track daily practice bit by bit. When I showed it to the teacher, they said "Wow, this... would sell!!" Okay, seems I got it right.

Actually Using It
It was perfect as an introduction until the piano practice habit formed. A two-page spread covers 2 songs, up to 5 times a day, for one week, and you can record for one month. With stamps or stickers, you can record playing through one song daily, up to 5 times.
No-Mistake Challenge Too
The last page can record up to 10 times for each piece played without mistakes. This is because the teacher gave us a separate "No-Mistake Challenge Strip," so I integrated it. Used before mini-concerts and such.
Starting with 2 Times
At first, since we're starting from no habit, I made it just 2 practice sessions. Once they can continue, they do the number they're satisfied with. Then sometimes, there are days with 5 times.
Sometimes Getting Heated
Not playing 5 times for the purpose of repeating 5 times, but days when they're not satisfied so they played and it ended up being 5 times, come about once a week.
But Don't Forget
Sitting in front of the piano at a set time every day and being able to touch it is the most important thing. Don't get carried away and push too hard.
Why Not Make a Log Book?
At the end of this article is a link to downloadable files. Print in monochrome copy, made with 3 sheets of A4 size.
Tools to Prepare
- Glue stick or double-sided tape
- Cutter or scissors
- Ruler
- Cutting mat
How to Make
The solid line in the middle is the cut line. Cut in half.

Fold along the fold lines as indicated. (At the fold lines, there are instructions for mountain fold and valley fold)
Glue pages together in order starting from the cat illustration cover. When gluing, leave about 0.5mm margin before the dotted line, which makes it neat when folded.

Once you have a long paper strip, fold it to make a booklet shape. Align the page edges when folding.

Finally, glue the cover's margin to the back cover to complete.

Let's Practice Every Day
Since it's one book per month, you can move on to new log books quickly. By the time you've accumulated 12 books, you might be able to face the piano without this log book. Please use it together as a companion for kids' piano practice.
