Completed TMT Telescope 1/250 scale model

About the TMT Project

TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope) is a next-generation extremely large telescope project planned for construction at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii. With a primary mirror diameter of 30 meters, it will be one of the world's largest optical and infrared telescopes, promoted through international cooperation among five countries: Japan, the United States, Canada, China, and India.

The project aims to advance cutting-edge astronomical research, including elucidating the origins and evolution of the universe, exploring extrasolar planets, and observing black holes. TMT will have significantly higher light-gathering power and resolution compared to currently operating telescopes, enabling observation of first-generation stars and galaxies from shortly after the birth of the universe.

In Japan, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan leads the project, playing an important role in the production technology of segmented primary mirrors and the development of observation instruments.

About This Model

The TMT 1/250 scale model is a precision three-dimensional model that reduces the actual telescope to 1/250th scale. Despite its compact completed size of approximately 24cm square, it faithfully recreates TMT's characteristic structure and form.

This model was developed as an important tool for education and outreach activities. Its purpose is to introduce the TMT project to the general public and foster interest in science. Through assembly experiences at workshops and events, participants can deepen their understanding of telescope structure and astronomy.

Design Features

  • Easy Assembly: Designed to be assembled without adhesive using part insertion and fitting
  • Precise Recreation: Faithfully expresses TMT telescope's characteristic hexagonal segment structure, dome, and mount
  • Durability: Uses 2mm thick styrene board to ensure sufficient strength for display
  • Educational Consideration: Reverse side of assembly guide explains telescope mechanisms and scientific significance

Color Model (Completed Work)

The completed color model recreates the actual TMT telescope's color scheme. The primary mirror section using mirror paper achieves a finish reminiscent of the actual reflector.

White Model (Design Verification)

White models created prior to production to verify assembly and structural integrity. Used for identifying problems during the design phase and optimizing assembly procedures.

White model overall

Assembly structure verification - testing part joints

Design phase mockup - mount structure verification

Development Process: Cardboard Prototype

A cardboard prototype that preceded the current styrene model. In the initial stages, cardboard was used to verify basic structure and size. Through repeated prototyping with this model, we were able to develop a more easily assembled and precise styrene model.
